Vehicles, Private Camp Sites etc...

Vehicles

We use specially converted Toyota Landcruisers for our mobile safaris. These are regularly serviced as they cover long distances in challenging environments.

Guests should be aware that, on occasions, vehicles may 'suffer punctures, breakdowns, get stuck or have to take detours (for broken bridges, roads under water etc). Should this be the case, our staff are experienced in problem solving and have the team at base working to help them should they encounter any difficulties.

It is however important that clients come with an adventurous attitude and an open mind to the trials and tribulations that Africa occasionally throws at us.

Private Campsites

We camp in private campsites in the national parks and game reserves. These are booked specifically for the client when they confirm their safari and are only for their use.

The private campsite is simply a designated area on which we can set up camp. Of the various campsites available to us we request our preferred ones when booking that allow us to camp further away from other sites.

Owing to the finite amount of campsites available we may book campsites that are closer to main thoroughfares and other campsites & should this be the case, we would let our guests know in advance.

Being a wilderness area, there are no ablution blocks, stand-pipes or running water as our camp is self-contained and we take everything in with us and away with us.

Should a guest be looking for running water, plumbing and flush toilets then a mobile safari may not be the best option for them.

In a mobile camp we use bucket showers and long drop toilets. These are very environmentally friendly and low impact as we don't install plumbing and septic tanks etc.

We do understand that modern bath rooms facilities can be important to people and as such a mobile safari might not be the best option for them if this is what they are looking for,

Value

Mobile safaris are excellent value for money.

Most of our trips are private safaris for our guests whereby they have a wide degree of flexibility which may not be possible with fixed location accommodation.

Having your own vehicle allows you to go further afield as well as being able to get to know your guide and camp staff better.

Why share your trip with 10-20+ others when you can have your own private team and vehicle with which to explore.

Guests may question the price of "sleeping in a mobile tent" as opposed to sleeping in a semi-permanent or permanent structure when the price of a mobile safari per night may begin to come close to a mid-range lodge.

However, one must look at this from the "perspective" of the complete product. How much would a lodge stay cost if there client were to request a private guide, chef, staff, vehicle and to have the camp for their party alone?

The Environment

A mobile safari with Gates of Afrikan Safaris has a very low carbon imprint and we practice the highest level of environmental ethics.

Once you are in the bush on a mobile safari there are no permanent structures or foundations, no plumbing, no air conditioning or fans. We actively encourage our guests to consider the amount of water they use for showers, as well as minimising use of plastic by refilling water bottles etc.

Rubbish is disposed of in the most environmentally responsible way and the staff are environmentally conscious and understand the importance of preserving these beautiful areas we visit for future generations.

We always leave a camp site as we would wish to find it; a small piece of the wilderness with nothing more than some footprints in the sand.
